Get to Know Sini Karhunen, our new Startup Ecosystem Specialist

1. Could you please give us a short introduction about yourself?

Sini, Startup Ecosystem Specialist. Labrador owner and basketball lover.

2. Can you tell us a bit about your professional background?

I have wide experience in finance, people operations, and project management, primarily within international startup environment, and with projects of external funding. Most recently at Sisu Factory, we built a startup soft landing service model from the ground up. Our team successfully attracted and supported the relocation of over 70 startups to Finland, helping founders and their families integrate smoothly into the Finnish ecosystem. The work was not only limited to business advisory but also ecosystem-building, creating connections between startups, innovation communities, and international networks.

I would say the highlight of my career has been pitching to the EIC jury and winning the prestigious EIC Accelerator 2.5Meur grant.

3. Can you explain a bit about your role at Aalto Startup Center?

My role at Aalto Startup Center is to develop the startup ecosystem by supporting entrepreneurs, managing projects and building partnerships with startups, investors, and companies. I also work on improving the A Grid community experience, coordinating events and communications, and connecting startups with resources and growth opportunities.

4. So, what brought you to Aalto Startup Center originally?

I joined Aalto Startup Center because I’m passionate about helping startups succeed and excited about innovation. For me, it’s not just about supporting founders, it’s about making a real impact by creating opportunities, building connections, and contributing to an ecosystem that shapes the future.

5. After a few weeks of working here, do you enjoy the experience? Which part is your favorite so far?

Yes, I’m really enjoying the experience! It’s been exciting to get to know such a talented and welcoming team. My favorite part so far has been organizing activities and schedules for SLUSH week. It’s the best time of the fall, with all the November darkness but same time huge excitement around the event, and so many happenings all over the capital region. Also, it’s a great way to connect with the startup community in this new role. Knowing the ecosystem well has been a real advantage. It is rewarding to put that knowledge into use from day one.

6. What’s your preferred work style?

I’d describe my style as finding structure in the chaos. I love juggling multiple balls at once and working across different networks, it keeps work exciting and full of opportunities to connect and create.

7. Do you want to say something to our startups?

I am eager to connect and understand the unique solutions you’re bringing to the ecosystem!

8. Any plans or goals for the remaining of 2025?

Complete my onboarding successfully and build a strong foundation for activities and projects for 2026.

9. Tell us one thing about yourself that would surprise us

This fall, together with my friends, we have started a Christmas caroling choir going door to door, singing in our neighborhood.
