How to access business opportunities as a researcher while staying employed at the university?

Working in the university as a researcher can be an amazing intellectual challenge and a rewarding experience. Unfortunately, the reward isn’t often monetary. Compared to running a successful spinoff company or simply working in the private sector, the pay one gets from research can be very lackluster.
