Who are you and what do you do?

NPHarvest: We are NPHarvest, our “Nutrient Catchers” is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly method to remove nutrients from different wastewater streams. We recover N (nitrogen) and P (phosphorous) from the wastewaters using our specially designed system without additional heat or pressure.

What kind of team do you have at the moment?

NPHarvest: Our team consists of experts in the waste management field, focusing especially on liquid waste streams. Our team members and the advisory board have a combined experience of over 50 years in the industry. Our expertise is in organic waste streams. Our core team is Dr. Juho Uzkurt Kaljunen as head of technology, Federico Varalta as head of business operations and Burak Yirmibesoglu in business development. An advisory team will be announced later.

What is your innovation?

NPHarvest: We have a membrane reactor system that differs from anything available on the market that doesn’t require heat or pressure input (meaning no extra energy needs). It can remove up to 90% of N and P from the wastewater while having the lowest commercially available operational costs in the world.

What kind of problem does your innovation solve?

NPHarvest: Wastewater contains nitrogen, phosphorous, organic substances and micronutrients. By recycling nutrients in the wastewater into fertilizer use it is possible to reduce consumption of commercial fertilizers. In addition, many new legislations are adopted by EU regarding fertilizer usage of recycled nutrients, creating the opportunity to commercialize a new set of recycled fertilizers.

What is your idea’s impact?

NPHarvest: NPHarvest offers a solution to recover (NOT REMOVE) nutrients from the wastewaters without requiring any subsidies to be profitable. We offer reduction in waste treatment costs and fertilizer income at the same time.

What are your main Sustainable Development Goals?
