1. Could you please give us a short introduction about yourself?

My name is Marc Gavaldà and recently I started as Communications Coordinator here at Aalto Startup Center. I am originally from Spain, where I spent the majority of my life, and almost 2 years ago I moved to Finland searching for new adventures and professional challenges.

2. Can you tell us a bit about your professional background?

Most of my experience has been in different organizations from the third sector. Back in Barcelona, I worked for 5 years for a federation of non-profits helping non-profits assisting young care-leavers. When I moved to Helsinki I worked in a non-profit promoting the well-being of migrant women through sport. In both cases, I was in charge of communications and marketing. Recently I changed paths a little bit, still working in communications but in the startup community. First organizing events and now here at Aalto Startup Center.

3. Can you explain a bit about your role at Aalto Startup Center?

I work as a Communications Coordinator, meaning that alongside the CoCo team (Communications and Community) I handle social media, newsletters, event organizing, design creation, and everything in between. I also take part in events representing the organization, and present it to different delegations from other countries coming to learn about us (for example, recently we explained what we do to different groups from Chile, Korea, and Japan).

4. So, what brought you to Aalto Startup Center originally?

I love communications and letting people know about the work organizations do. There is a lot going on everywhere, and I think it is important to let our audience know what we do so more people learn about us and we can help even more startups! I love the phrase if it is not communicated, it didn’t happen. I always said I would like to work at a university, so I feel like I achieved one of my goals.

5. After a few months of working here, do you enjoy the experience? Which part is your favourite so far?

I have been here for less than 2 months now but I can honestly say that I enjoy it tremendously. My favorite part is creating different designs for our projects. I created business cards, posters, and logos and it is something that I really enjoy and I want to keep doing. Also organizing small events like the Slush-y breakfast we recently celebrated. That was really fun and people enjoyed it a lot.

6. What was one of your first projects in the role?

Organizing this community breakfast and helping the ESA BIC Finland project start some marketing-related projects.

7. What’s your preferred work style?

Usually, I prefer coming to the office, so I can be with my colleagues. Communication is much easier this way and I prefer it to just texting or sending emails. I will start working from home on some days to focus on important tasks without interruptions, but I want to spend most of the time at the office.

8. Do you want to say something to our startups?

Please, feel free to send me whatever you want to promote! It will be my pleasure to post about it on social media and our different channels 🙂

9. Any plan or goals for the coming 2023?

Work-related goal would be to make people more aware of the work we do here at Aalto Startup Center, so when the time comes that we have an open call, startups are familiar with our work. Personal goal (if I stay in Finland for longer) is to learn the language and prioritize my well-being over other people’s requests.

10. Tell us one thing about yourself that would surprise us!

I like to dance K-pop (Korean pop) choreographies in my free time. And I enjoy really much karaoke, which doesn’t mean I am good, but I am really passionate about it 🙂
